Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season to the UConn Huskies Thursday afternoon in a 1-0 game. The Hoyas fall to 11-1-6 on the season and 7-1-2 in the conference as the Huskies rise to 9-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the BIG EAST.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Credit to UConn, their backs were against a wall and they knew what they had to do so they could afford to really go for it. Their kids battled hard, left a lot of energy on the field, and good luck to them in the tournament. In terms of us, I didn't feel we were at our best today. The first half was pretty even with not much to it. We weren't good enough in possession, but were very assured defensively. In the second half, we changed our system just to make the field a little bit bigger when we had possession and it did not really take off. They took advantage of our one slip up for the goal and they didn't have another chance until the last minute when we were throwing numbers forward. Their keeper didn't have to make too many quality saves, besides taking down some comfortable crosses which she did a good job on. One of our best players today was
Jenna Royson. Not having
Kaitlyn Parcell available,
Daisy Cleverley not being game fit after coming back from camp with New Zealand, and not having
Boo Jackson did not help us so we were a bit light in the outside back position. There are no excuses, we just didn't get the job done at home and came up short. Hopefully, this will fuel the girls for the postseason and we can do better out in Cincinnati next week."
How It Happened
- Georgetown dominated possession off the kickoff and throughout the beginning of the match.
- Sophomore Erin Martin took the first shot of the game for the Hoyas from distance, but the ball narrowly skimmed the top of the bar before heading out of bounds.
- Senior Devon Lis had the second strike off a laid back ball in the 18-yard box which was into the arms of the Huskie goalkeeper Kailtlyn Mahoney.
- In the 58th minute the Huskies had a breakaway down the right side of the field. Jaydah Bedoya played a ball across the six to an unmarked Lucy Cappadona who put UConn on the board.
- Graduate student Cleverley subbed in as she has just returned from international play with the New Zealand women's national team.
- Freshman Cyanne Doyle found the feet of a fast-moving Julia Leas inside the six who connected with the ball well, but was deflected off a UConn defender.
- The Hoyas were unable to get the equalizer and received their first loss of the season, 1-0.

- Georgetown heads to Cincinnati, Ohio next week for the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinal after it received a first-round bye along with conference leader and host Xavier.
