Hoyas Host Villanova to Begin Second Half of BIG EAST Slate

WASHINGTON – Playing a home-and-home round robin for the first time in BIG EAST history, Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team hosts Villanova on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. to open the second half of league play. The No. 10/11 Hoyas closed out the first half of the conference slate with a 4-1 record in BIG EAST play and are currently 5-1 overall on the season.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown returned to its winning ways with a 14-9 road victory at Providence.
  • Graham Bundy Jr. led the Hoyas with a career-high four goals while TJ Haley added six assists.
  • Haley became just the third player in program history to record at least six assists in two different games during his time on the Hilltop.
  • Jake Carraway posted a hat trick with three goals and Nicky Petkevich added two goals and an assist.
  • Colin Munro chipped in two goals while Zachary Geddes, Dylan Hess and Peter Thompson each found the back of the net for the Blue & Gray as well.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas held their fourth opponent of the season to fewer than 10 goals. Providence had just 14 shots on goal despite 41 total shots thanks to Georgetown's aggressive defense forcing low-percentage attempts all day.
  • Eight different Hoyas were credited with a caused turnover and 12 of GU's 33 ground balls came courtesy of long poles, including five from Will Tominovich.
  • In goal, Owen McElroy collected five saves between the pipes.
  • James Reilly dominated faceoffs yet again, winning 17-of-23 (.692) trips to the 'X'. He added a game-best 10 ground balls as well. With his 10 ground balls, he moved into ninth place all-time at Georgetown with 193, passing Mike Kanach (1999-02) and current teammate Gibson Smith's 191.
 
ABOUT GEORGETOWN
  • Georgetown is 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in BIG EAST play.
  • The Hoyas are currently second in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.50), third in assists per game (11.00) and scoring defense (7.00) as well as fourth in scoring margin (+8.50).
  • Carraway leads a potent GU offense that is averaging 15.50 goals per game, eighth best in Division I.
  • Carraway has 24 goals and nine assists for 33 points while Haley ranks second with 27 points (3G, 24A), followed by Bundy with 20 points (16G, 4A), Petkevich with 18 points (11G, 7A), Hess with 11 points (7G, 4A) and Declan McDermott with 10 points (7G, 3A).
  • In all, 16 different Hoyas have found the back of the net this season and Georgetown has assisted on 66 of its 93 goals.
  • Defensively, McElroy boasts a 7.28 goals-against average, fifth best in the nation, and an .556 save percentage to rank 17th in the NCAA. He has collected 46 saves on the year and posted double-digit save performances against St. John's, Marquette and Denver.
  • Georgetown's defense is second in Division I in caused turnovers (10.50 per game) with Alex Mazzone leading the way with nine, James Donaldson and Joe LiCalzi with six, along with Will Godine and Will Tominovich both adding five. Twenty-one different Hoyas have been credited with at least one takeaway on the year.
  • At the 'X', Reilly ranks ninth in the NCAA with a .670 faceoff winning percentage and the Hoyas entire faceoff unit is eighth in D1, winning .647 of their draws. Reilly is also 10th in the nation in ground balls per game (7.83).
 
ABOUT VILLANOVA
  • Villanova is 3-1 on the year, all in BIG EAST play, but has not played since March 14. The Wildcats have wins over Marquette, Providence and St. John's while their only loss came in the season opener against the Hoyas.
  • Keegan Khan leads VU with 18 points (8G, 10A), followed by Matt Campbell's 14 points (11G, 3A), Patrick Daly's 11 points (8G, 3A) and Eric Overbay's 10 points (4G, 6A).
  • Justin Coppola paces Villanova's faceoff unit, winning .630 (58-of-92) of his attempts.
  • In goal, Will Vitton has started all four games for the Wildcats and has a .500 save percentage to go with 41 saves and an 11.41 GAA.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Georgetown and Villanova last met in the 2021 season opener with the Hoyas putting together a dominating 16-1 performance over the then-16/18 ranked Wildcats
  • Jake Carraway had eight goals and an assist in the win en route to earning US Lacrosse National Player of the Week honors.
  • One of the longest rivalries in program history, Saturday's meeting is the 37th showdown between the two schools. Villanova holds the 20-16 all-time edge in the series.
  • Georgetown has won the last four against the Wildcats and Villanova's last win in the Nation's Capital was in 2017.
