Georgetown Wraps Up 2021 Regular Season at Loyola

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team plays one final regular season tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship next week as it travels to face longtime rival Loyola on Thursday in nonconference action. The game will be played under the lights at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network at 6:30 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown clinched a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a 14-5 victory over visiting Providence on Saturday.
  • Owen McElroy had a career day between the pipes, collecting 24 saves on the day while allowing just four goals. His 24 saves were the second most in a single game in Georgetown program history.
  • Jake Carraway paced the offense with five goals and an assist while Graham Bundy Jr. and Declan McDermott both had two goals and two assists. Peter Thompson added a pair of goals, Dylan Watson had two goals and an assist and Dylan Hess notched the remaining goal for the Blue & Gray.
  • For his efforts, McElroy was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and added his third nod to the USILA National Team of the Week. Hess collected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the third Hoya this season to do so, and both Bundy Jr. and Carraway earned spots on the Weekly Honor Roll.
  • Nicky Petkevich was credited with three assists on the day with Colin Munro adding one as well.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas held their eighth opponent of the season to fewer than 10 goals and the fourth with no more than five.
  • Georgetown had 11 caused turnovers, including two each from Alex Mazzone and Zachary Geddes from the defensive midfield. Mazzone had four ground balls on the day, as did Joe LiCalzi, James Reilly and Carraway.
 
ABOUT GEORGETOWN
  • The Hoyas are 10-1 overall and have won six-straight games.
  • Georgetown currently leads the NCAA in scoring defense (7.18), scoring margin (+7.00), clearing (.915) and assists per game (10.73).
  • Carraway leads a potent GU offense that is averaging 14.18 goals per game, 13th best in Division I.
  • Carraway has 39 goals and 13 assists for 52 points while TJ Haley ranks second with 41 points (4G, 37A), followed by Bundy with 37 points (29G, 8A), Petkevich with 30 points (12G, 18A), McDermott with 21 points (13G, 8A), Watson with 18 (14G, 4A) and Hess (9G, 7A) with 16 points.
  • In all, 20 different Hoyas have found the back of the net this season and Georgetown has assisted on 118 of its 156 goals.
  • Defensively, McElroy boasts a 7.13 goals-against average, best in the nation, and a .617 save percentage to top the NCAA. He has collected 111 saves on the year.
  • Georgetown's stout defense has Alex Mazzone leading the way with 13 caused turnovers. Joe LiCalzi has 11, James Donaldson has nine and both Will Tominovich and Zachary Geddes have been credited with eight each.
  • At the 'X', Reilly ranks 16th in the NCAA with a .632 faceoff winning percentage and the Hoyas entire faceoff unit is also 14th in D1, winning .631 of their draws. Reilly is also 17th in the nation in ground balls per game (7.09).
 
ABOUT LOYOLA
  • The Greyhounds are 6-5 on the year following an 11-7 win at Lafayette on Saturday.
  • Aidan Olmstead leads Loyola with 41 points (18G, 23A), followed by Kevin Lindley with 36 points (32G, 4A), Evan James with 32 (23G, 9A) and Peter Swindell with 22 (13G, 9A).
  • In goal, Sam Shafer has started 10 of 11 games for the Hounds and has an 8.79 GAA to go with a .509 save percentage and 83 saves.
  • At the 'X', Bailey Savio takes a lion's share of faceoffs and has won 121-of-218 (.555) on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Loyola is Georgetown's oldest and longest running rival with 42 games between the two programs since the Hoyas became a varsity program in 1970.
  • The Greyhounds hold a 35-7 series advantage over the Blue & Gray and have won the last four meetings.
  • Georgetown's last victory in the series was a 13-12 win in Baltimore in 2015.
  • Each of the last six games in the series have been decided by three goals or fewer.

  • Georgetown looks to defend its back-to-back league tournament titles as it travels to play in the BIG EAST Championship, Presented by JEEP next week in Providence, Rhode Island. The Hoyas are the second seed in the draw and will play third-seeded Villanova on Thursday, May 6 at 8:30 p.m. with the game broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
