Hoyas Face Defending National Champion Virginia in NCAA Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON – Playing in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals for the first time since 2007, the fifth-seeded Georgetown University men's lacrosse team takes on defending national champion and fourth seed Virginia on Saturday at noon in Hempstead, New York. The Hoyas are making their 10th quarterfinals appearance in program history and look to advance to their second ever semifinal.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown defeated former BIG EAST rival Syracuse 18-8 in the NCAA First Round in College Park, Maryland.
  • Jake Carraway and Declan McDermott led the Hoyas with five goals each while Dylan Hess added four of his own.
  • Nicky Petkevich had two goals and two assists on the night while Graham Bundy Jr. found the back of the net twice.
  • TJ Haley and Dylan Watson added a pair of assists each and Peter Thompson chipped in an assist as well.
  • In goal, Owen McElroy collected 10 saves for his 10th double-digit save performance of the season and collected four ground balls.
  • At the 'X', James Reilly won 14-of-28 (.500) faceoffs and added a game-high eight ground balls.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas were credited with nine caused turnovers including two each by Joe LiCalzi and Jack Leary. Will Godine had five ground balls and Gibson Smith had four.
  • As a unit, Georgetown's defense held the Orange to just 18 shots on goal in the game and held Syracuse scoreless in the third quarter.
 
ABOUT GEORGETOWN
  • The Hoyas are 13-2 overall and tied the program record for wins in a season - matching totals from 1999, 2018 and 2019.
  • Georgetown currently leads the NCAA in scoring defense (7.93) while ranking second in assists per game (10.07), man down defense (.816) and third in scoring margin (+5.87).
  • Recently named a Tewaaraton Award Finalist, Carraway leads a potent GU offense that is averaging 13.80 goals per game, 13th best in Division I.
  • Carraway has 51 goals and 16 assists for 67 points while Haley ranks second with 54 points (5G, 49A) and leads the nation in assists per game. Bundy has 48 points (36G, 12A), Petkevich adds 41 points (19G, 22A), McDermott has 32 points (23G, 9A), Watson with 26 (19G, 7A) and Hess (17G, 7A) with 24 points.
  • In all, 20 different Hoyas have found the back of the net this season and Georgetown has assisted on 151 of its 207 goals.
  • Defensively, McElroy boasts a .602 save percentage, best in the nation, and a 7.97 goals-against average to lead Division I as well. He has collected 165 saves on the year.
  • Georgetown's stout defense has Alex Mazzone and LiCalzi leading the way with 16 caused turnovers each. James Donaldson, Zachary Geddes, Wallace Halpert each have nine and Will Tominovich and Smith have been credited with eight.
  • At the 'X', Reilly ranks 17th in the NCAA with a .580 faceoff winning percentage and the Hoyas entire faceoff unit is 15th in D1, winning .580 of their draws. Reilly is also 13th in the nation in ground balls per game (7.07).
 
ABOUT VIRGINIA
  • The Cavaliers are the still defending national champions from 2019 following the cancelation of the 2020 season.
  • Connor Schellenberger leads Virginia with 60 points (25G, 35A) followed by Matt Moore with 59 points (27G, 32A) and Payton Cormier with 47 points (39G, 8A). Three other UVA players have at least 20 points on the season including Charlie Bertrand with 30 (23G, 7A), Ian Laviano with 26 (20G, 6A) and Peter Garno with 23 (20G, 3A).
  • In goal, Alex Rode has started all 13 games for Virginia and has a 12.16 GAA to go with a .543 save percentage and 149 saves.
  • At the 'X', Petey LaSalla takes the lion's share of faceoffs and has won 135-of-2226 (.626) on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Georgetown and Virginia have met four times in program history with the Cavaliers holding a 4-0 advantage.
  • The two teams have previously met in the NCAA Quarterfinals twice – a 12-7 Virginia victory in 2003 and a 20-8 Cavaliers win in 2006. Virginia would go on to win the NCAA National Championship both of those seasons.

  • Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Chris Cotter calling the action and Paul Carcaterra providing commentary.
  • Opening faceoff is at noon at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York.

  • The winner advances to the NCAA Semifinals on Saturday, May 29 in East Hartford, Connecticut and will face the winner of the quarterfinal game between Rutgers and North Carolina.
