GU Track & Field Runs Times Among Nation’s Best at Bryan Clay Invitational

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown track & field team had a strong showing at the 2022 Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. With just a quartet of runners out on the West Coast, the Blue & Gray made the most of its trip, with all times ranking among the top 30 nationally and three among the top 12.

Track & Field Assistant Coach Mitchell Baker
"Corman has done a fantastic job embracing the bigger picture as we have built into the spring in a different way. This was our first race to test some of that tweaked approach, and she did a great job focusing on the pieces of the day that were in her control showing poise and assertiveness in a stellar field, the fastest seeded heat at Bryan Clay. That approach and race management helped  her close as well as she ever has in passing and holding off all but one of the NCAA athletes in the field, which included multiple All-Americans and at least one NCAA Champion. It was fun to see her race with that level of self-belief."

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sami Corman was the lone competitor for GU on the women's side. She clocked 4:15.57 to finish fourth in the 10th heat of the women's 1,500-meter invitational behind a pair of professional runners and a competitor from the University of Washington. Her time was good enough for seventh overall and fifth among collegiate runners.

  • Corman's time currently ranks 12th nationally and first among BIG EAST athletes.

  • Matthew Payamps and Jack Salisbury both competed in the first of a 12-heat men's 1,500-meter invitational. Payamps finished seventh in the heat with a time of 3:37.60 with Salisbury right behind in eighth place (3:37.70) in a section that included a pair of runners from Nike's OTC Elite. The times were good enough for 10th and 11th overall.

  • Payamps and Salisbury currently own the seventh- and eighth-fastest times nationally and the top two times in the BIG EAST.

  • Also competing in the invitational men's 1,500m was Matthew Rizzo, who finished fifth in the third heat. His time (3:39.90) was 28th overall and currently ranks 30th nationally.

UP NEXT

  • The Hoyas will be off the remainder of the holiday weekend and return to competition on April 22-23 at the Virginia Challenge, hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
