Stokes’ NCAA-Leading Steeple Steals the Show at Virginia Challenge

WASHINGTON – With the postseason portion of the outdoor schedule in sight, the Georgetown track & field team continued to hit its stride at the Virginia Challenge over the weekend. The Hoyas put up a number of personal and season bests showing they are poised for a strong showing in the second half of the outdoor season.

ON THE RECORD
"A very good weekend overall. Parker Stokes won the steeplechase in an NCAA-leading time in his season opener in the event. Tim McInerney, Camden Gilmore and Abel Teffra also ran incredible middle distance races. I think we are the deepest middle distance program in the NCAA and we are looking forward to showcasing that at Penn Relays and as the postseason starts." - Assistant Track & Field Coach Brandon Bonsey

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Parker Stokes was the highlight for the Hoyas at the Virginia Challenge as his opening performance in the steeplechase was an NCAA-leading 8:32.22 that was not only the NCAA best so far this season, but a facility record at UVA's Lannigan Field. Jantz Tostenson joined Stokes running a personal-best 8:46.70 to finish seventh at the meet. His time ranks 29th nationally.
  • In the men's 800-meter run, Tim McInerney won the event while Abel Teffra finished fifth with times of 1:48.69 and 1:49.94, respectively. The duo were the first of four Hoyas among the top 15 in the event with three of the four putting up personal bests. In the invitational section, Theo Woods ran 1:49.79.
  • Additionally, in the 1,500-meter run, Camden Gilmore (3:41.74) and Teffra (3:42.55) finished second and fourth, respectively, with both times registering as personal bests.
  • In the women's 10,000-meter invitational, Charlotte Dannatt ran a personal best 33:51.59 to finish third. Her time ranks 39th nationally.
  • Jack Van Scoter finished fourth in the men's 10,000-meter invitational with a personal-best 28:53.34.
  • In the women's 1,500-meter invitational, Maggie Donahue ran 4:20.67 to finish 17th in the stacked field. Chloe Gonzalez managed a personal-best 4:22.28 in the women's 1,500-meter (open) to finish fourth.
  • Katie Dammer ran a personal-best 10:30.90 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase invitational. The time was good enough for 13th overall.
  • The Hoyas saw a season best in the women's triple jump as Eni Akinniyi jumped 12.31m (40' 4 ¼"), good enough for 10th place.

UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas will have a short break before heading to Philadelphia for the 126th Penn Relays. The three-day event will be held at historic Franklin Field April 28-30. It will be the first time the Hoyas return for the famed meet following a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
