Carapellotti and Georgetown Earn First BIG EAST Major Awards

WASHINGTON – After clinching a berth into the BIG EAST Baseball Championship, catcher Owen Carapellotti captured Georgetown's first-ever BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honor unanimously while Head Coach Edwin Thompson and his staff also earned the program's first Coaching Staff of the Year award, as announced by the league on Wednesday.

Nolan McCarthy secured a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team alongside teammate Ethan Stern while Jake Hyde captured a spot on the second team. GU's two first team selections tie the program's top mark for most in a season, joining two pairs of Hoyas in Nick Collins and Matt Smith in 2015, and Mike Moss and Steve Iannini in 1985.

Owen Carapellotti | Fr. | C/UTIL | Ann Arbor, Mich. - BIG EAST Freshman of the Year
  • Carapellotti became the first player in program history to earn the conference's freshman of the year award.
  • He is just the third individual to capture a major BIG EAST postseason award, joining Nick Collins (2015 - Player of the Year) and Brian O'Hare (1996 - Pitcher of the Year).
  • In 45 appearances this season, the Hoya freshman has boasted a .285 batting average with 45 hits, 17 doubles, eight homers, 38 RBIs and 26 runs scored. His 17 doubles are tied for eighth in the country among freshmen.

Nolan McCarthy | Gr. | RHP | Portland, Ore.

  • The Hoya righty boasted a 6-2 record this season with 82 strikeouts and just 19 walks across 75 innings of work.
  • In conference play, McCarthy picked up four of his six wins and tossed a pair of complete games, knocking off Villanova (3-2) in the opening weekend of conference play before blanking Seton Hall (9-0).

Ethan Stern | Gr. | INF | Palo Alto, Calif.
  • Stern picked up his first BIG EAST honor with a selection to the conference's first team.
  • The Hoya second baseman ended the regular season with a 31-game reached base streak while hitting .310 on the year. He also registered second-best marks on the team with 54 runs scored, 63 hits and 51 RBIs.
  • The California native started in all 21 BIG EAST games this season, compiling a squad-leading 27 hits to go along with eight doubles, four homers, 20 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Jake Hyde | So. | OF | Darien, Conn.
  • Hyde captured his first All-BIG EAST selection with his second team nod.
  • The Connecticut native dominated in the regular season, slashing .357/.442/.678 with 82 hits, 18 doubles, 18 homers, 55 RBIs and 69 runs.
  • In league action, Hyde put forth a steady .284 average with 25 hits, 14 RBIs and a BIG EAST-leading 28 runs scored.
