Salisbury and Teffra Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals in 1,500m

WASHINGTON – Jack Salisbury and Abel Teffra advanced to the next round of the NCAA championships on the first day of the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary Championships, held on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. Wednesday is the first of two days of men's competition that continues on Friday. Women's competition at the Robert C. Haugh Complex takes place on Thursday and Saturday.

ON THE RECORD
"The priority at this meet is always to put yourself in a position to advance to the next round and Jack Salisbury and Abel Teffra ran smart races to give themselves that opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing them compete again on Friday for a chance to compete in Eugene. The other results from the 1,500m and throughout the day are certainly not what we wanted for today, but they do not diminish what those athletes were able to achieve this season. It is a major accomplishment to even get to the East Prelim. In particular, Jack Van Scoter has been a tremendous leader in our program - he is not ending his career the way he wanted to, but his impact on this program continues. Tomorrow is a new day and I'm looking forward to our women lining up to compete. One day does not define the entire weekend and there's a lot more racing left to do." - Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Alton McKenzie

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Competing in the first of a four-heat 1,500-meter first round, Salisbury handily qualified for the quarterfinals with a time of 3:48.48, finishing third with the top five advancing automatically. Salisbury stayed toward the front and coasted through the finish with ease.
  • Teffra ran in what would end up being the fastest of the first round heats, splitting 1:43.30 over the first 700 meters. As the field continued through the final two laps, Teffra finished sixth in the heat with a time of 3:44.29, narrowly missing the automatic qualifier spot. However, once all heats had completed, Teffra's time was the top non-AQ time and the Fresno, California native earned a spot in the quarterfinals on time.
  • The duo will compete in the first of a two-heat quarterfinal on Friday, currently scheduled for 5:15 p.m. ET. The top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times will advance to the semifinals in Eugene, Oregon.
  • Also competing on Friday will be Parker Stokes (H3 of 3) and Jantz Tostenson (H1 of 3) in the steeplechase. The top three from each heat plus the next three fastest times will advance to the semifinals at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon's campus.
