Hoyas Close out NCAA East Preliminaries; Three Runners Will Compete in Eugene

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown track & field team closed out competition on Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminaries as it prepares for NCAA Championships next month. Charlotte Dannatt and Maggie Donahue secured their spots in Eugene after qualifying in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday. Parker Stokes was the lone qualifier for the men in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after winning his heat yesterday.

ON THE RECORD
"The middle and long distance women put together a strong day of competing. Kiera Bothwell and Katie Dammer were hoping for a breakthrough but gave it everything they had. They end their Hoya careers having helped reshape our program and their leadership will be greatly missed. Chloe Scrimgeour stormed back in the race over the last 1,000 meters of the 5K. I think she realizes how much more she has inside her and I'm excited to see her chase higher levels. Riggins put herself out there and came up just short and was the first out of qualifying to the NCAA Championships. I'm very proud of her growth and the way that she competed. Now on to Eugene with Donahue and Dannatt to race the 10,000m." - Assistant Track & Field Coach Mitchell Baker

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Melissa Riggins lined up in the second heat of 800-meter quarterfinals and despite recording the 12th-fastest time (2:04.47), she narrowly missed advancing to the semifinals by just one spot.
  • With three automatics from each of the three quarterfinal heats, Riggins found herself in what would be the fastest overall heat with two of the three time qualifying spots coming from her heat. Just six-hundredths of a second behind the last time qualifier, Riggins' time was faster than the last automatic qualifier from the third heat.
  • This was the freshman's debut in the NCAA Preliminaries and her first collegiate outdoor season.

UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas have a bye-weekend next week as they prepare for the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
  • Donahue qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run. She placed fourth overall with a time of 34:26.27.
  • Dannatt also qualified for Eugene in the 10,000-meter run finishing with a time of 34:27.22. The graduate transfer made an impressive breakout in the last 20 yards to secure herself a spot in the Championships.
  • Stokes continued his reputation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after he won his heat in Bloomington on Friday. The junior had the third best time of the meet and will be joining Dannatt and Donahue in Eugene in two weeks.
