Hoyas Drop Tight Battle Against Lehigh

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team fall to 2-7 after dropping a close contest 14-10 to Lehigh (5-2) at Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. 

ON THE RECORD 
"We had more positive plays today, however, we were not able to overcome the mistakes we made which led to run for Lehigh," - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the game. 

How It Happened
  • Tatum Geist got the Hoyas off to an early start with a goal in the opening minute of the contest. Annie McGovern extended GU's lead with a free-position goal four minutes later. After six and a half scoreless minutes, the Mountain Hawks responded with a free-position goal from Gabby Schneider to bring Lehigh within one 2-1. With 30 seconds left in the first, McGovern scored her second goal of the game to return the Hoyas to their two-goal lead 3-1. 
  • Lehigh came out strong in the second, scoring four-consecutive goals to grab a 5-3 lead. The Hoyas responded with a three-goal run sparked by a free-position goal from Gracie Driggs. At halftime the Hoyas led by one 6-5. 
  • Lehigh came out strong again in the third, with five unanswered goals to earn the largest lead of the afternoon for the Mountain Hawks 10-6. Tessa Brooks ended Lehigh's run with a goal at the 1:43 mark. Twenty seconds later, Olivia Memeger scored to earn her 20th goal of the season and put Lehigh up 11-7. Emma Gebhardt landed one last goal for the Hoyas with 40 seconds remaining in the third to bring GU within three 11-8. 
  • Molly Snow kicked off the fourth quarter for Lehigh with a free-position goal at the 12:02 mark. Starr responded three minutes later with a goal assisted by Gebhardt. The Mountain Hawks widened their lead to five after two-consecutive goals. Leanna Tsahalis scored a final goal for the Hoyas at the 1:41 mark but the Mountain Hawks would earn the 14-10 win. 
Of Note
  • McGovern, Starr and Tsahalis led the Hoyas with two goals each while Driggs, Gebhardt, Brooks and Geist each added one. 
  • Maggie O'Brien tallied a team-best five draw controls while Lily Athanas earned three. 
  • Athanas paced the defense with five ground balls. 
  • The Hoyas led the Mountain Hawks in ground balls 20-8 and shots 35-23.

  • The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop to face No. 3 Maryland on Wednesday, March 20. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Cooper Field.
