WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Women's Lacrosse Coach
Ricky Fried announced his retirement on Thursday afternoon. Fried departs as the winningest coach in program history after 20 years at the helm.
In his 20 seasons, Fried led the Hoyas to a 196-156 overall record and a 94-31 record in BIG EAST regular season games. During the 2014 season, he became the winningest coach in program history following a 13-6 win over Temple. Under Fried, Georgetown earned seven BIG EAST regular season titles, made seven trips to the BIG EAST Championship Game, winning in 2010 and 2019, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times, reaching the quarterfinals twice.
Fried coached 23 All-Americans as well as the National Goalie of the Year, two BIG EAST Attackers of the Year, four Midfielders of the Year and five Defensive Players of the Year to go along with 110 All-BIG EAST first and second team selections. Additionally, he and his staff won BIG EAST Staff of the Year on two occasions.
"I want to thank Lee Reed, Georgetown University and all of the people that have supported me for the past 22 years," said Fried. "I owe all of the current and past players a huge debt of gratitude for all they have given to the program both on and off of the field. Finally, to all of the assistant coaches I have had the pleasure to work with, any success I have attained is in large part due to them supporting and pushing me to improve daily. Words can not convey the appreciation and love I have for each one of you. I wish the current team much success this year and for years to come."
Lee Reed, Director of Athletics, shared: "On behalf of the University, I would like to thank Coach Fried for his contributions to the Hoya women's lacrosse program and we wish him well." A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
