Women’s Lacrosse Hosts American in 2025 Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team will open the 2025 campaign at home on Cooper Field. The Hoyas will host crosstown rival American on Friday at 4 p.m.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Defender Lily Athanas, attacker Gracie Driggs and midfielder Maley Starr were named Preseason All-BIG EAST. Last season, Driggs and Starr were named Second Team All-BIG EAST. 
  • In the 2025 BIG EAST Preseason Poll, Georgetown was picked to finish fourth with 22 points.
  • Seniors Leah Warehime, Emma Gebhardt, Starr and Athanas were selected by their teammates to be team captains for the 2025 season. 
  • The Hoyas return 24 student-athletes from the 2024 squad and welcome in seven freshmen and two graduate transfers. 
  • Head Coach Caitlyn Phipps is entering her first season as the head coach of the Blue & Gray after spending the past 12 seasons as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland. She brings 15 years of collegiate coaching experience, as well as an impressive playing career for the Terps. As a coach, Phipps has mentored six Tewaaraton winners, five National Midfielders of the Year, one National Attack Player of the Year and 13 Conference Players of the Year.  
ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • Last season the Eagles finished 7-9 overall and 3-6 in Patriot League action. 
  • AU added 10 freshmen to the roster after graduating four seniors last year.  
  • The Eagles were picked to finish sixth in the Patriot League preseason poll, receiving 74 total votes.
  • Head Coach Lindsay Teeters is entering her fifth season at the helm of American women's lacrosse.
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Friday's contest will be the eighth meeting for the Hoyas and the Eagles with Georgetown holding the dominant 7-0 advantage. 
  • The Hoyas opened the 2024 season with an 18-13 victory at American. 
  • The Hoyas captured a 17-11 victory when the Eagles last came to Cooper Field on March 27, 2012.
