HOYA SAXA! Abel Teffra Wins Mile at NCAA Indoor T&F Championships

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University track & field's Abel Teffra won the men's mile title at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex. The title comes on the second day of the two-day championship. Earning 15 points, the Georgetown men finished tied for 14th out of 56 teams to score points at the meet. The women finished tied for 50th out of 61 teams to score with 2 points.

"Melissa Riggins qualified through the gauntlet of another semifinal with gritty racing to the line; you just cannot count her out. In the final and against the field with by far the fastest personal bests in NCAA history, she came away 7th without having her best physical day; the outcome was short of her ambitions, but her racing acumen and toughness were at peak levels giving us yet again the best effort she could produce on the day. The DMR all faced a new level of intensity with all four being newcomers to the national stage; they learned a great deal about what it takes, and what it will take, to advance rungs up the ladder; if they keep producing the same effort they showed and adapt those lessons to their next opportunity at this level, we're confident they'll be even more ready. They can carry 2nd-Team All-America recognition with pride. In the 5000m Jenks competed hard fighting illness; despite being a bittersweet end to her Georgetown career having just missed a 1st-Team All-America honor, our staff and her teammates are grateful she was on our side this year; she will forever be a Hoya. Scrimgeour's own 5000m was simply outstanding; the pace was very quick thru 3000m (on 15:00 pace); she showed pack-running savvy that she's not had the chance to develop on this stage before, so she adapted like a great athlete. After the field pulled back the pace hard for 1000m, there was a huge surge the last 1000m that she coveted gamely; she's disappointed to be one spot out of 1st-Team All-America in 9th, but she fought tooth and nail for the entirety of the race and comes away with a school record (15:14) and one of the fastest American collegiate times in NCAA history. It's fitting that the Georgetown record-books will now have Scrimgeour and then Jenks right behind, as those two have fed off of each other all year." - Assistant Coach Mitchell Baker
