Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 loss to James Madison this afternoon at North Kehoe Field. The Hoyas fall to 3-3-3 overall, while the Dukes even up at 4-4-0.
The Hoyas dominated the first half of action, out-shooting the Dukes, 9-1, with most of the play in the Georgetown end of the field. In the first 10 minutes, Georgetown had three strong opportunities as a shot by senior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) was blocked near the goal line by a JMU defender, a header by junior Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) narrowly missed the cross bar and a 1 v 1 shot by senior Cristina Araps (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery) was blocked by the keeper and cleared at the endline by a Duke defender.
James Madison broke the scoreless tie early in the second half, on a goal by Corky Julien at 57:39. Julien took a feed from Sarah Cebulski down the left side of the field, settled and fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box passed a driving Hoya keeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y,/West Hempstead) to the lower right corner. Minutes later, JMU kept the pressure one, with a shot by Jess Remmes just missed the upper left corner.
Georgetown kept pushing in the last 10 minutes. Araps chipped a shot from the left wing, with nine and a half minutes left, over the JMU keeper's head that drilled the cross bar and bounced back into play. The rebound shot by Filauro was blocked by a Duke defender and later cleared. With under three minutes left, a shot by senior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly) from the top of the 18-yard box, just sailed high.
For the game, the Hoyas controlled the game action, with a decisive 16-4 edge in shots.
Georgetown returns to North Kehoe Field on Friday, September 22 at 3 p.m., hosting Rutgers, in their first home BIG EAST contest of 2006.
