Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to West Virginia this afternoon in McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are now 5-17 overall on the season with a 1-6 slate in BIG EAST Conference while the Mountaineers improve to 12-9 with a 3-5 mark in league action. Game scores were 21-30. 27-30, 28-30.
Sophomore Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) led the team with eight kills, followed up by classmate Dana Dumas (Nokomis, Fla./Pine View) and freshman Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) who both recorded seven kills apiece with Dorismond adding three assisted blocks. Junior Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) turned in six kills and led the team with a .500 hitting percentage.
For the game, Georgetown hit .148 while West Virginia posted a .261 hitting percentage.
Georgetown kept game one close as there were 14 tie scores during the game. Georgetown pulled ahead 17-15 on a diving kill from Dumas on a dish from sophomore Allison Kern (Naperville, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep). However, despite the lively performance from the Hoyas, West Virginia pulled ahead on a four-point run and went on to extend the lead to 22-19 before a Georgetown timeout. The break proved more beneficial for the Mountaineers as they won five of the next six points prompting the second GU timeout. A service ace and consecutive kills from West Virginia's Lisa Hough and Abby Tevis sealed game one for WVU.
In the second game, Georgetown trailed 9-8 before assisted blocking efforts by junior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Dorismond sandwiched a Dorismond kill giving the Hoyas an 11-10 lead and inducing a West Virginia timeout. The Mountaineers would tie the game at 15 but fell behind, 20-16, behind three-straight WVU errors and brought about the second WVU timeout of the game. The timeout was useful as the West Virginia tied the game once again, this time at 24 before GU called its first timeout of the game. West Virginia won six of the next nine points to take game two.
Game three saw the Mountaineers jump to a quick 15-9 lead. The Hoyas crawled back within two (17-15) after a Dorismond kill, Dumas ace and Hardy kill but WVU extended the lead to 23-17 on a GU error. A Lisa Hough kill gave West Virginia a commanding 27-21 but the Hoyas wouldn't give up and took advantage of wayward plays from the Mountaineers and capitalized on a Dumas kill and a shared blocking effort from Dorismond and Hardy to trail 27-24. A kill and a block for WVU gave the Mountaineers quadruple match point. However, a kill from Hardy followed by a Niesen and Hardy block, and Hardy kill saved three match points and pulled the Hoyas within one (29-28). However, a kill from Hough ended game three and the match.
The Hoyas return for their third of a four-match homestand on Tuesday, October 16 when they host non-league opponent Virginia Commonwealth to McDonough Arena for an 8 p.m. match. This is the first of two matches this season against the Rams as the Hoyas will travel to Richmond, Va. on Saturday, November 24 for a match at VCU.
