Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost a 3-1 match at Seton Hall this afternoon in South Orange, N.J. The Hoyas are now 5-20 overall with a 1-8 mark in BIG EAST Conference play while the Pirates improve to 12-11 with a 3-7 slate in league play. Game scores were 19-30, 24-30, 30-23, 27-30.

"Overall the Hoyas played very well today," Head Coach Arlisa Hagan Williams said. "Kortney [Robinson] did a wonderful job for us on the outside and Courtney [Cohen] did a nice job from the rightside. Jessie [Hardy] did well passing and on defense and as always Caitlin [Boland] did well in leading our offense. We did a nice job passing, we just need to work on finishing the points. Seton Hall played well and today, they just had more kills than we did."

Sophomore Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Gove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) played outside hitter today and led the team with 17 kills and recorded a .319 hitting percentage. She added another 17 digs for the double-double. Classmate Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) was second on the team with 10 kills and chipped in 15 digs for the second double-double of the afternoon. Junior middle blocker Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) put up a nine kills and led the team with a .368 hitting percentage. Junior captain Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) led the offense well and tallied 46 assists.

The Pirates rolled through game one as the Hoyas struggled to find a rhythm, hitting below .100 while SHU hit .333 for the game.

In game two, the Hoyas improved to 15 kills and maintained a hitting percentage of .263. The game remained close as a Hardy kill pitted the game at nine points. However, SHU won eight of the next 11 points to take the 17-12 lead and continued to hold the lead despite the beginning of a Hoya rally that put the Blue and Gray within three points (23-20). Georgetown called a timeout and sophomore Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) returned from the break to cut the deficit to two with a kill. The Hoyas could not keep it up as the Pirates recorded kills on six of the next 10 points to win game two and carry a 2-0 lead.

Game three saw the Hoyas jump out to a quick lead behind three kills from sophomore Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and a kill and service ace from freshman Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons). The Hoyas continued the high-energy play and extended the lead to eight behind the serve of Boland taking advantage of three-consecutive wayward plays from Seton Hall. A Robinson kill gave the Hoyas a 22-13 lead prompting an SHU timeout. The Pirates pulled within four (23-19) inducing a GU timeout but the Hoyas bounced back with back-to-back kills from Robinson and Hardy and then a Robinson service ace before the second Pirate timeout. An errant SHU play and two-consecutive Dorismond kills gave the Hoyas game point. Seton Hall stifled two GU game points; however, a Hardy kill ended game three in favor of Georgetown.

With the momentum from the previous game, Georgetown surged ahead and played strong at the beginning of game four and won four-straight points to lead, 9-8. The Pirates tied the game at nine and the play was even throughout the game. Both teams hit .200 for the game but a two-point difference (25-23) brought about a Georgetown timeout. The Pirates returned from the break to win three of the next four points to trigger the second Hoya timeout. The Hoyas pulled within three (28-25) with another Hardy kill but a vital kill from Allie Matters gave SHU quadruple match point. An error and Robinson kill gave the Hoyas hope but the Hoyas were cut short with a kill from SHU's Kristen Denboer to end the match.

The Hoyas return to action tomorrow, October 28 when they play Villanova.
