Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team played the first of two matches on the road this weekend, losing to Notre Dame, 3-0 (16-30, 20-30, 14-30) at the Joyce Athletic and Convocation Center.
It was the seventh-straight loss for the Hoyas, and the 14th in the last 15 outings, as the team falls to 5-22 overall and 1-10 in conference play. Notre Dame improved to 10-12 and 6-5 in the BIG EAST.
"We played a very strong Notre Dame team tonight," Head Coach Arlisa Hagan said. "Kortney Robinson served very well and competitively. Courtney Cohen came off the bench and hit three kills on six attempts before we went into a timeout."
The Fighting Irish jumped on top quickly in the first game, winning 10 of the first 14 points to take a 10-4 lead. Georgetown rallied and pulled to within three points, using a 7-4 run to narrow the gap to 14-11 on a kill from sophomore Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside). ND won the next four points and pulled away for the 30-16 win.
In the second game, Georgetown won the first point, but the Irish took the next eight to take an 8-1 lead. After winning two points, Notre Dame used an 11-2 run to take a 19-5 lead and forcing the Hoyas to call a timeout. Georgetown regrouped after the timeout and used a 9-5 spurt to pull to within 24-14 after blocks from Niesen and junior captain Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy). Notre Dame called a timeout and won the next point, but the Hoyas took five of the next nine points, capping the run with four-straight points on serves from sophomore outside hitter Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove). The rally fell short as the Irish won the second game, 30-20.
In the third game, the teams split the first four points, but Notre Dame won 13 of the next 18 points to open a 15-7 lead and went on for the 30-14 win.
Robinson finished with three service aces and three digs, while sophomore middle hitter Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley) had four kills off the bench.
Georgetown plays its final BIG EAST road match of the season on Sunday, November 4, visiting DePaul. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
