Washington, D.C. - Two Hoyas turned in a double-double performances today as the Georgetown volleyball team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to VCU this afternoon in Richmond, Va. The Hoyas end the season with a 5-27 overall record while the Rams improve to 12-20 on the year. Game scores were 30-28, 23-30, 24-30, 30-24, 12-15.
Sophomore Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) and junior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) repeat their double-double performances from the last match with Robinson tallying 14 kills and 19 digs while Boland turned in 41 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Dana Dumas (Nokomis, Fla./Pine View) followed up with 13 kills while classmate Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) turned in 10 kills and maintained a .308 hitting percentage.
In game one, both teams traded several points at a time until a three-point Ram lead (21-18) prompted a GU timeout. Following the break, the Hoyas picked up nine of the next 13 points with kills from McKoy, Dumas and Robinson. Back-to-back blocks from sophomore Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and junior Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) brought about a VCU timeout. The Rams returned from the break losing the next point to go down, 28-25, and a Robinson kill paired with a wayward play from VCU ended game on in favor of the Blue and Gray.
Game two saw the Hoyas drop to a hitting percentage below .100 while VCU upped the ante to .300, giving the Rams game two handily. Despite upping the tempo in game three and limiting their errors in game three, the Hoyas were still unable to match VCU's play as they dropped game three to fall behind, 2-1.
Georgetown picked up a seven-point lead in game four behind the serve of Niesen as they took advantage of the wayward play of VCU while adding kills from Dumas and blocks from McKoy and Cohen. Georgetown held on to the lead but consecutive blocks from VCU sent Georgetown back to the drawing board with a timeout despite a five-point lead (25-20). The break proved beneficial for the Hoyas as Robinson returned from the break to record a kill and put the Hoyas within four points of tying the match at two games apiece. Another Robinson kill, a pair of Robinson kills and a key solo block from Cohen ended game two and sent the match to a deciding game five.
Georgetown fell behind in game five, 7-4, before the Hoyas called their first timeout. Five kills off the hands of four different Hoyas - Niesen credited with two while Hardy, Dumas and Robinson recorded one - tied the game at nine and sent VCU calling the timeout. The timeout proved advantageous for the Rams as they won the next three points and were three points from the match. Georgetown committed one error and gave up a kill in the next three points to give the Rams quadruple-match point. Back-to-back errors from VCU brought the score to 14-12, but a GU service error ended game five and the match.
