Georgetown Volleyball Drops First Match of D.C. Challenge

Aug. 24, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost its first match of the 2007 D.C. Challenge tonight, 3-0, to American in the Physical Education Building on George Mason's campus in Fairfax, Va. The game scores were 18-30, 23-30, 22-30. The Hoyas return to action tomorrow at American's Bender Arena for day two of the tournament.

The attack was led by sophomore Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) who tallied 14 kills to lead the team, falling just shy of her career-high. She chipped in another seven digs to round out the night. Classmate Dana Dumas (Nokomis, Fla./Pine View) followed up with 12 kills of her own and eight digs for the night.

Sophomore Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) led the team with a .125 attack percentage, tallying three kills.

In the first game, the Eagles went on to take 13 of the first 17 points. The lead was insurmountable for the Hoyas to overcome and American went on to win the first game.

In the second game, the Hoyas knotted the game at 14 before American won seven of the next 11 points to take a 21-8 lead. Four kills, an ace and three errant GU plays solidified the win for American.

The Hoyas were again in contention during game three with the score level at 15. However, American went on to win nine of the next 14 points for the 24-20 lead. Three vital kills, a service ace and a key block off American's Claire Recht and Rubena Sukaj gave the Eagles the win despite two kills from Dumas.

"After a slow start, we put forth great effort going into the end of game one," Head Coach Arlisa Hagan Williams said. "Our momentum stayed with us in game two and three. Everyone saw playing time. Jessie was great as the libero and our outsides got a lot of looks. We will have to continue to work on connecting with the middles but that will come with time. All in all, a valiant first effort."

The Hoyas return for the second day of action tomorrow. They take on George Mason at 1 p.m. and George Washington at 5 p.m. at American's Bender Arena.
