PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown baseball team lost a pair of games Saturday afternoon, falling 15-0 to Saint Joseph's and 13-1 to Iowa. Both games were played at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Game one...
Saint Joseph's scored five runs in the first two innings en route to a 15-0 victory over the Hoyas.
Georgetown's starter Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) went four innings, giving up six runs, only three earned, with six strikeouts. The Hawks scored nine runs, six earned, off of the Hoyas' bullpen. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) doubled to lead the offense.
Game two...
Iowa (10-4) opened things up with nine runs over a three inning span to hand the Hoyas their second tough loss of the day, 13-1.
In just his second career start, Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) went 5.2 innings, saving a tired bullpen. He gave up 11 runs, nine earned while throwing 75 of his 105 pitches for strikes. Felix van der Vaart (Annandale, Va./Flint Hill School) threw a career-high 3.1 innings in relief, striking out three. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was 2-4, including his first career hit in the first inning. Ryan Toomey (Mendham, N.J./Pingry School) doubled in his first career at-bat and scored the Hoyas' run.
Toomey, entering the game as a pinch-hitter, doubled with one out in the ninth. After a Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) single, Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) grounded into a fielder's choice to plate Toomey. The run ended a scoreless streak of 24 innings for the Hoyas' offense.
Georgetown (6-10) wraps up its trip to Florida and the Snowbird Classic on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Iowa. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) will take the mound for the Hoyas.
