WASHINGTON - Sophomore Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) of the Georgetown baseball team was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference on Monday. The award recognizes Collins' efforts in the Hoyas' three-game series against Seton Hall this past weekend.
Collins batted .462 (6-for-13) and drove in the game-winning run with a single, part of a three-hit performance, as the Hoyas beat Seton Hall, 4-3, in walk-off fashion on Friday. On Thursday, he added two more hits including a three-run double that completed Georgetown's comeback from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning. In all, Collins totaled five RBI on the weekend, adding a sacrifice fly in Saturday's series finale.
This is Collins' second nod to the Honor Roll this season and ninth time that a Georgetown baseball player has been honored by the BIG EAST. Senior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and sophomore pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley) was selected to the Honor Roll back on March 31. Smith was also named to the Honor Roll on March 24, earning nods in back-to-back weeks. Collins was named to the Honor Roll on March 17. Senior outfielder Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) and junior Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) both earned nods to the Honor Roll on March 11. Anderson was also selected back on Feb. 24.
Georgetown steps out of conference play this week for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) at Shirley Povich Field. Originally schedule to start at 4 p.m., the first game will now begin at 2 p.m. The teams will play two seven-inning games, with the second contest starting soon after the completion of the first.
