Four Go Sub Four at Valentine Invitational

Feb. 14, 2015

WASHINGTON - It was no ordinary Saturday for the Georgetown track & field program today up in Boston, Mass., at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Already a historic season that saw All-American Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) run a sub-four mile, the first Hoya to do so since the 2009 season - the Hoyas stepped it up on Saturday afternoon with four Hoyas running sub four in the mile. Joining Bile, All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day), All-American Ryan Manahan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and Michael Lederhouse (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) join an elite group of GU runners who have run a sub-four mile.

In the stacked field at the Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, the foursome lined up in the same heat with teammate Zach Zingsheim (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) alongside them as the bunny to set the pace. Zingsheim completed his role as pace setter and stepped off the track with the field in good position as the quartet proceeded to execute a stellar race plan.

Bartelsmeyer was the top Hoya finisher, timing in at 3:58.45 - the second-fastest time in program history. Bartelsmeyer's time, good enough for fifth place overall in the race, was just one-hundredth of a second faster than the time put up by former Hoya standout and seven-time All-American Andrew Bumbalough in 2008 at the Giegengack Invitational.

Bile, in an unprecedented move, ran a sub-four mile for the second time in one season - just two weeks apart. He then managed to improve upon his time by a half second, clocking 3:58.54 and placing eight. Bile was followed by Manahan (3:58.57, 9th) and Lederhouse (3:59.54, 10th) right behind.

The race boasted 12 athletes, both collegiate and professional, to go sub four. Six of the athletes were collegiate performers and the Hoyas accounted for four of them. With today's results at the Valentine Invitational and the Iowa State Classic, 22 athletes have run a sub-four mile this season. The times from the Hoya foursome all rank among the top 15 in the country currently.

Also competing at the Valentine Invitational was Ryan Gil (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in the men's 1,000-meter run. Gil's time of 2:24.56 in the first section of the race placed fourth overall.

Georgetown returns to action on Friday and Saturday, February 20-21, at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
