Plymouth Meeting, Pa. - The Georgetown baseball team scored nine runs in the first three innings and held on for a 9-3 win at Villanova on Friday evening in a BIG EAST baseball contest. The game was played at the Wildcats' Villanova Park at Plymouth.
Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched a season-high 6.2 innings, giving up three runs, just one earned, on eight hits while striking out two. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led the offense with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) had two hits and scored a pair of runs while Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) finished 1-for-2 and was on base four times with three walks and scored twice.
The Hoya (15-14, 2-2 BIG EAST) bats were awake early, putting up four runs in the top of the first inning. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led off with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's). Collins looped a single over the second baseman to score Shirley. After a couple of wild pitches pushed Collins to third, Kuzbel drew a walk to put runners on the corners before Bushor lined a double into the right-center field gap to score Collins and push Kuzbel to third. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) followed with a fly ball to deep center field that went for a two-run triple to bring the lead to 4-0.
Five of the first six batters for GU reached via a hit in the top of the third inning as the Hoyas extended their lead with five more runs. Collins singled to start things off and scored all the way from first on a double by AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) to the wall in right-center field. Kuzbel lined a single into left to put runners at the corners before Bushor singled in Carter for his second RBI of the game. With one out, Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run, the first of his career to push Georgetown's lead to 9-0.
Villanova (12-16, 0-1 BIG EAST) scored two unearned runs in the third and added another in the fourth.
The two teams resume their series on Saturday with a 1:15 p.m. start time. Right-hander Matt Smith (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) will get the start on the mound for the Blue & Gray.
Notes - Davis has now pitched 12-consecutive scoreless innings over seven relief appearances ... Bushor jumped back into first place in the BIG EAST with 26 RBI. Of those 26 RBI, 16 have come with two outs.
