Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team scored six runs over its final three at-bats, but fell short to St. John's, 11-8, on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference game.
Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) each had three hits, a home run and scored two runs to lead the Georgetown offense. Busch drove in three runs while Collins had two RBI. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) had two hits and a RBI.
St. John's (26-14, 9-3 BIG EAST) grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first off of Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) on a pair of singles, a double and a home run. The Red Storm added a run in the third to extend their lead to 5-0.
The Hoyas (22-20, 5-5 BIG EAST) began chipping away at the deficit, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) led off the inning with a walk and went to third on a double by Collins. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) pushed Webber across the plate with a ground out for his conference-leading 34th RBI.
Busch led off the bottom of the fifth inning with his fifth home run of the season, and fourth in the past nine games, launching a two-strike curveball over the left field fence.
St. John's scored six runs, just four earned, off of Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) in the seventh and eighth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Busch singled on a ground ball up the middle and scampered all the way around to score on a double by Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School), bringing the score, at the time, to 7-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, after the Red Storm put up four runs in the top half of the inning, the Hoyas plated three runs to cut the score to 11-6. Bushor lined a two-out single to left field, scoring Collins, who had singled, from second. After a passed ball pushed Bushor and Carter, who had walked, into scoring position, Busch singled both runners in for his third hit of the game.
Collins crushed his sixth home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Webber, who had singled with two outs, to provide the final score, 11-8.
The two teams resume their three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) will take the hill for the Hoyas.
