Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team again could not climb out of an early hole, losing to St. John's, 4-1, on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started on the mound and went seven innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits. He struck out four. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) pitched two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) all had two hits.
For the second-consecutive night, St. John's got on the board in the top of the first inning, this time taking a 2-0 lead on three, two-out hits.
The Hoyas responded right away with a run in the bottom half of the first. Busch led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third when Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) grounded out to the right side. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) lined a single into left, allowing Busch to score and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The score remained the same until the Red Storm added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the top of the sixth to provide the final margin, 4-1.
Georgetown threatened in the bottom of the eighth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. However, St. John's intentionally walked Collins and Carter grounded out to the end the threat.
The Hoyas and Red Storm conclude their series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Shirley Povich Field. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the hill for the Hoyas.
