Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team fell to Virginia Military Institute (VMI), 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wake Forest's David F. Couch Ballpark. The game was part of the Wake Forest Invitational.

Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) started for GU and went 5.2 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits. He struck out three and walked two. Noah Clark (Dallas Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) made his collegiate debut and fired 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) also made his first appearance as a Hoya and had an impressive scoreless inning with one strikeout.

VMI scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, but the Hoyas threw out two runners on the base paths to limit the damage after the Keydets loaded the bases with one out. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire/Catholic) first threw out a runner at the plate from left field and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) nabbed a base stealer at second base.

The Keydets put runners on first and third in the third inning but GU again limited the damage, allowing just one run as the middle infield combination of Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) turned a 6-4-3 double play.

VMI extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff single and one-out double.

The Hoya offense put runners on base in each of the first five innings, but could not come up with a clutch base hit. Georgetown had a golden opportunity in the top of the fifth inning as Webber reached on an error to lead things off and Ricciardi lined his second single of the game into left field. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) sacrificed both runners into scoring position with one out, but Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) struck out and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) flew out to right field.

DeRenzi lined a one-out double into the right center gap in the top of the eighth and advanced to third on a fly out by Kuzbel. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) pinch hit and was robbed of an RBI single on a diving play by the VMI third baseman.

The Hoyas wrap up the weekend on Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for Georgetown. Live stats for the game can be found at guhoyas.com.
