PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team had 14 hits and at least one base runner in every inning, but fell to Western Michigan University (WMU), 12-5, on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played at North County Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. GU fell to 4-7 on the season, while WMU improved to 1-9.
Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) was one of four Hoyas with at least two hits, finishing 3-for-5. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) each had a pair of singles. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) was on base twice with a single and a walk and also finished with an RBI and a run scored.
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and battled through 4.0 innings. He gave up seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits while striking out four. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs with one strikeout. Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) gave up an unearned run in an inning of work and Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville) gave up two runs, one earned, with one strikeout.
Georgetown grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Shirley led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian). After a wild pitch sent Shirley to third, Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) pushed him across the plate with an RBI groundout.
WMU responded with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Only one of the runs was earned as the Hoyas had a costly error.
GU got a pair of runs back in the top of the second. With one out, Dillon walked, Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) was hit by a pitch and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) loaded the bases with a bunt single. After a WMU pitching change. Hall forced in a run with a walk and Shirley hit a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the deficit to one, 4-3.
The Broncs came back with a two-out single and home run in the bottom of the third to regain their three-run lead, 6-3. They added another run with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth.
A Dillon RBI groundout in the top of the fifth scored a run for the Hoyas and brought them within three, 7-4. Bialkowski lined a one-out single in to right field and went to third on a single by Garza before Dillon chopped a grounder to second.
WMU scored twice in the sixth, added and unearned run in the seventh and two runs, one earned in the eighth.
Georgetown loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on singles from Kuzbel, Garza and Ricciardi. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS), in his first at-bat of the day, drove in Kuzbel with a single into left field.
The Hoyas will play one more game at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, taking on Moravian at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) will make his first career start for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.guhoyas.com.
