WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but stranded the tying run at third base in a 5-4 setback to Seton Hall University on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 21-17 overall and 0-5 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates improve to 20-16 on the season, and 4-4 in conference action.
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits. He struck out three and walked five. Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) fired three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, finishing with two strikeouts.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) each had two hits and a run scored to lead the offense. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) also had two hits, while Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) finished with two RBI.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as two walks and a double within the first three batters of the game put the Hoyas in an early 2-0 hole.
Georgetown immediately tied things up, scoring two runs before recording an out in the of the second. After a walk to Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and single by Racusin put the first two runners on, Weisenberg drove in both runners with a triple into the right-center field gap.
Seton Hall retook the lead, 5-2, with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when the Hoyas loaded the bases with nobody out on a walk and two singles. An RBI ground out by Bernauer scored Jake Berstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and DeRenzi crossed the plate when Racusin reached on a fielding error to cut the deficit to one, 5-4, and push Garza, the tying run to third. A ground out ended the rally however as the Hoyas dropped the second game of the weekend.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at noon. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
