PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Georgetown University baseball team managed only four hits, falling to Villanova University, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 22-20 on the season and 1-7 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats improve to 10-24 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started and went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out eight. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) fired 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three, and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) retired the only batter he faced.
Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) each led the offense with a single and a walk.
Villanova took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, stringing together three singles and a double. The Wildcats tacked on a fourth run in the bottom of the seventh.
Georgetown's best chance came in the top of the sixth when Kuzbel walked and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) singled to put two runners on with two outs. Racusin was robbed of an RBI hit on a diving stop by the first baseman to end the threat.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com and in-game updates can be found on the team's twitter account: @GtownBaseball.
Notes ââ'¬" Kuzbel's single in the first inning extended his streak to 37-consecutive games of reaching base safely … He now has 199 career hits and needs just one more to become the 11th member of Georgetown's 200-hit club.
