April 29, 2017 PHILADELPHIA - The Georgetown University track & field team concluded competition at the 2017 Penn Relays, held at historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, in front of a boisterous crowd of 47,420 fans. The Hoyas closed the three-day meet with a trio of events, including two Championship of America (COA) relays and an IC4A relay.
The women's 4x800-meter squad put together a time of 8:33.73 to finish eighth in the prestigious COA section. Jocelyn Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield/Northeastern) ran the leadoff leg for the Blue & Gray, splitting 2:09.59, and kept the Hoyas in contention as the field started to spread thin. Kennedy Weisner (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) was on the second frame, keeping Georgetown among the top seven through her exchange as the All-American, who really found her stride during the indoor season in the mile, split 2:07.39.
When All-American Piper Donaghu (Portland, Ore./Grant) received the baton, Stanford and Villanova attempted to pull away and create a lead pack. Donaghu kept up with the pace of the chase pack, splitting 2:09.71, before handing off to All-American Emma Keenan (Gwynned Valley, Pa./Gwynned-Mercy Academy) on the anchor leg. Running a strong anchor leg in a talent-laden race, the Hoyas clocked 8:33.73 for eighth place.
In the COA Men's 4xMile, a familiar foursome took the track as three of the four legs were on Friday's distance medley relay (DMR) squad. All-American Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) was in charge of the first leg, where he kept Georgetown among the leaders the entire way through. All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) maneuvered his way through the pack on the second leg, registering the fastest recorded split of the frame (4:03.5) and the second-fastest mile split of the day, before handing off to All-American Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial). Carpenter's easy stride made his stanza look easy through the final exchange. All-American and 800-meter specialist Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) anchored the foursome. With the sun bright and shining over the track, the field stepped on the gas as White worked to keep pace. The Hoyas would finish ninth with a time of 16:47.60.
In the IC4A section of the men's 4x400-meter finals, the foursome of Quincey Wilson (Lithonia, Ga./Lithonia), Nick Sullivan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), Daniel Anderson (Ozark, Mo./Ozark) and Nathaniel Gordon (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) put together a 3:14.81 to finish fourth.
Up next on GU's slate is a split-site weekend where the Hoyas travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the heralded Payton Jordan Invitational, hosted by Stanford, while another group will stay local and compete at the Kehoe Twilight Meet, hosted by the University of Maryland. Both meets are scheduled for Friday, May 5.
