Nine-Run Inning Leads Georgetown to Sweep Over NYIT

April 9, 2017

Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. - Nine different Hoyas scored a run and eight had hits as the Georgetown University baseball team used a nine-run eighth inning to defeat NYIT, 13-3 on Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas completed the three-game sweep and won their sixth-consecutive game while improving to 20-12 on the season. The Bears fell to 3-22-1.

Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) led the GU offense with three hits and three RBI, while scoring two runs. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) had two hits, including his third home run of the season, and drove in three runs, while Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) registered three hits and two RBI. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) had two hits and scored two runs, while Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) both scored twice.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) pitched 6.0 innings on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits to pick up his sixth win of the season. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./Maret) combined for a scoreless inning, while Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) did not allow a run in an inning of work.

The Hoyas opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. After a passed ball put two runners in scoring position, Kuzbel lofted his nation-leading eighth sacrifice fly of the season, scoring DeRenzi from third, to give GU a 1-0 lead.

NYIT tied the game with an unearned run in the third and took a 2-1 lead with a solo home run in the fourth.

Georgetown answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Racusin grounded a single into right field to score Hall, who had walked, from second.

The Blue & Gray took the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Kuzbel and Garza led things off with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. After Stevens singled in Kuzbel, Garza came home on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) to give GU a 4-2 lead.

The Bears cut the lead to one with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Hoyas answered with their largest scoring inning of the season, plating nine runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter. With the bases loaded and one out, Austin Shirley (Stafford, Pa./Conestoga) blooped a pinch-hit single down the left field line to score Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) from third. DeRenzi followed with a two-run single to push both Davis and Hall across the plate before Racusin delivered an RBI single to score Shirley. After a pitching change, Kuzbel lined the first pitch he saw over the right fielder's head for a two-run double. Garza followed with an RBI single before Stevens completed the scoring with a two-run homer, well over the right field fence, to put Georgetown on top, 13-3.

The Hoyas will remain home next weekend as they open BIG EAST Conference play with a three-game series, April 13-15, against Creighton University at Shirley Povich Field. Live stats and a video stream for all three games will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Live updates can be found on the team's twitter account: @GtownBaseball.

Notes ââ'¬" Kuzbel's eighth sacrifice fly of the season in the first inning set the Georgetown single-season record … He now has 13 sacrifice flies in his career, which is tied with Erick Fernandez ('11) and Glen Bruckner ('87) for first all-time … Superko is the first Hoya pitcher with six wins in a season since Jimmy Saris had six in 2008.
