March 28, 2018 Game Notes vs. UNCG
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team heads back out on the road this weekend, returning to the state of North Carolina for the third time this season, for a three-game series at UNC Greensboro (UNCG). Because of the Easter holiday, the teams will play Thursday (6 p.m.), Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.). Links to live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas (7-16) are coming off of a 10-5 victory over Delaware State on Tuesday afternoon, moving to 4-2 at Shirley Povich Field this season. Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) won his first career game and GU tied a season high with six doubles in the victory. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) was on base three times with two hits and a walk, scored two runs and had an RBI. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had two doubles, and also had an RBI and scored a pair of runs. Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) also had a multi-hit performance, including his first career hit, with a single and a double.
On Monday, sophomore left-handed pitcher Brent Killam was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, recognizing his performance in his start at Ohio State last Saturday. Killam turned in the best start of his career, leading Georgetown to a 5-1 win, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one run on seven hits. He struck out 11, striking out one batter in each inning, to nearly double his previous career high. It was Killam's second career honor, and the first time a Hoyas has earned Pitcher of the Week recognition since Simon Mathews (C'17) earned the award in back-to-back weeks in 2016.
For the season, O'Reilly leads the Hoyas with a .364 (16-for-44) batting average. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who has started all 23 games at shortstop, is batting .348 (31-for-89) with team highs of eight doubles and 19 RBIs. James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) and Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) round out those batting over .300. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) are tied for the team lead with eight stolen bases, which ranks second in the BIG EAST.
UNCG enters the weekend series with a 17-6 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the Southern Conference. The Spartans are batting .342 as a team and have four players batting over .375 through 23 games. Cesar Trejo is hitting .455 with four home runs and 30 RBIs, while Andrew Moritz is also over .400, coming in with a .435 clip with two home runs and 23 RBIs. Dillon Steward is hitting .386 and has a team-high six home runs to go with 21 RBIs. The Spartans like to run, having stolen 51 bases in 23 games to go along with a .420 on-base percentage and a .493 slugging percentage.
