The Hoyas answered right back, cutting the deficit in half with a run in the bottom half of the first. Bernstein lined a one-out double down the right field line and came around to score when Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) chopped a single over the first baseman's head to make it 2-1.
The Broncos got a two-out, two-run single on a high chopper over the infield to extend their advantage to 4-1 in the top of the third.
Six singles in a span of seven batters plated four runs for GU in the bottom of the fourth to give the Blue & Gray a 5-4 lead. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and McCabe led off with consecutive knocks before Achecar lined one down the right field line for a single to score Stevens and send McCabe to third. O'Reilly followed with an RBI single to push McCabe across the plate. After a fly out sent Achecar to third, James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) looped a single into center to score a run and push O'Reilly to third. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) laid down a perfect safety squeeze for a single as O'Reilly eluded the tag at the plate to give GU the lead.
After Morreale got a big strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Hoyas padded their lead with a run in the bottom half. Two walks and a single loaded the bases before O'Reilly was hit by a pitch to make it 6-4.
Western Michigan retook the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring four times off of Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Deerfield Academy) to go up, 8-6. The Broncos scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings off of Conor Cuse (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/Stanford).
