No. 20/20 Georgetown Blanks Virginia Tech 1-0

Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 20/20 Hoyas defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. A 49th minute goal by Maja Lardner would be the game winner as Georgetown notched its second-consecutive shutout and win at home.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"That was one of those games we will look back at near the end of the season and say it was a very important game for us. We played against a very good opponent in Virginia Tech, who will finish near the top of the ACC this season. Hopefully it ends up being a great NCAA Tournament resume win for us. I thought the girls were fantastic today, that is the first goal Virginia Tech has given up this season in four games after scoring three goals in two of their three games so for us to shut them out means we did a good job on the defensive side as well. I am really proud of the effort and the kids did really well executing our game plan. The kids who came off the bench did really well and gave us what we needed which was fantastic and we are happy to take the win."

About the Match
  • Virginia Tech looked dangerous at kickoff, managing a shot on goal in the third minute of the game that was saved by Georgetown's Allie Augur.
  • The first 45 saw end-to-end play as both the Hoyas and the Hokies pressed, with each team notching three shots on goal. Still, neither side could get on the board.
  • An unassisted Lardner opened up the scoring in the 49th minute, putting the Hoyas up 1-0.
  • The Hoyas continued their attack, generating chances and tallying two more shots on goal throughout the second half.
  • In the final 11 minutes, the Hokies amped up their search for an equalizer with three more shots on goal, but they could not crack the Hoya defense and find the back of the net. Ultimately, the 1-0 score would hold to secure the Hoya victory.
Of Note
  • Lardner's goal was her first of the season.
  • Augur made three saves in the match for her second consecutive clean sheet.
  • The Hokies outshot Georgetown 11-8 but could not get on the board.
