Feb. 15, 2014

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Redshirt junior Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts, but the Georgetown baseball team fell 5-1 to Marshall in its season opener on Saturday. The game was played at Wake Forest's Gene Hooks Field.

Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) had two singles and scored a run and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) each reached base twice with a pair of walks. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) had four strikeouts in three innings of work in his first career appearance. The Hoyas drew nine walks, but the offense left 12 runners on base, including two bases loaded situations. Georgetown pitchers struck out 16 batters on the day

The Hoyas got on the board first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Anderson started the frame with a single up the middle. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) drew a one-out walk and Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) loaded the bases when he reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) worked the Hoyas second walk of the inning, after falling behind 0-2, to score Anderson.

Meanwhile, Vander Linden was cruising, not allowing a base runner until a two-out walk in the third inning. He needed just nine pitches in the first inning, throwing eight for strikes.

He ran into some trouble in the fourth, giving up a walk and two doubles as Marshall jumped ahead.

The Thundering Herd tacked on an unearned run in the seventh and two, one off of Ellingson and one off of Gino Basso (Glen Allen, Va./Godwin) in the ninth.

Georgetown will play Wake Forest at 4 p.m. on Sunday before closing out its opening season with a matchup against Towson at 10 a.m. on Monday.
