Port Charlotte, Fla. - The Georgetown baseball team could only muster four hits, falling to Western Michigan, 4-1, on Monday evening. The games were played at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Florida as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/The Episcopal School of Dallas) struggled in his third start since Tommy John surgery, giving up two runs, one earned, while going just 1.1 innings. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) pitched 4.2 innings of one-run relief with three strikeouts. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) each threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) had two hits and was on base three times. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) was on base twice with hit-by-pitches and scored a run.
The Hoyas (3-8) fell behind quickly as Western Michigan (6-7) scored twice in the first inning.
After the Broncos extended their lead to 3-0 with a single and triple in the fourth inning, GU cut the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Webber was hit by a pitch and stole second base. With two outs, Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) hit a ground ball that the first baseman misplayed, allowing Webber to score.
Western Michigan added an insurance run in the seventh inning off of Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca).
The Hoyas have a day off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday against Lehigh at 3 p.m. Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) is scheduled to take the mound for the Blue & Gray.
