Hoyas Fall at No. 15 FAU

March 6, 2016

Final Stats

BOCA RATON, Fla. - No. 15 Florida Atlantic University (FAU) knocked out 17 hits, defeating the Georgetown University baseball team, 14-2, on Sunday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium. GU fell to 4-6 on the season, while the Owls improved to 9-1.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went three innings, giving up five runs on four hits and two walks. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) had three strikeouts in an inning of relief. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) led the offense with two hits.

FAU grabbed the lead with a three-run bottom of the first. The Owls loaded the bases with one out before a sacrifice fly and a triple gave them an early 3-0 lead.

The Owls extended their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The first four batters reached, but Superko was able to limit the damage, inducing three-consecutive fly outs to get out of a jam.

FAU added a run on a sacrifice fly off of Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-0.

The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the fifth. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) led off with a single between the third baseman and shortstop and went to third on a double by Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City). One out later, Webber crossed the plate on a ground out by Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) to cut the deficit to 6-1.

FAU got the run back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and then tacked on four runs, only three of them earned, on two GU errors in the bottom of the sixth. Two more runs, one earned, crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh and the Owls scored another in the eighth.

Georgetown loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning on singles from Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) and a walk to Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice). A groundout by Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) scored Ricciardi, but GU could not climb any closer.

The Hoyas will have Monday off before playing two games in Port Charlotte, Florida as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. GU will play against Mansfield at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday before taking on Western Michigan on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Live stats for both games will be available at www.guhoyas.com.
