BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team had 13 hits in game one, earning a split of a doubleheader against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) on Tuesday evening at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas took game one, 7-5, in a seven-inning contest before falling, 9-4, in game two. With the doubleheader split, GU improved to 20-23 on the season while UMES moved to 13-27.
Game One: Georgetown 7, UMES 5 (7 innings)
The Hoyas overcame deficits of 3-0 and 5-3, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to defeat UMES in seven innings, 7-5, in game one of the doubleheader.
Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) led the offense with three hits and two runs scored while four other Hoyas had two-hit games. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) each finished with two RBI.
Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started and went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out three. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) picked up his fifth win of the season with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and registering three strikeouts. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) got his eighth save of the season with a scoreless inning of work.
After UMES opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, the Hoyas responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) opened the frame with a single and moved to third on a double from Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy). After a line-drive double play erased Ricciardi, Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) reached on an infield single, scoring Webber from third. Kuzbel followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position before Bialkowksi lined a two-run single into right field, tying the score, 3-3.
The Hawks retook the lead, 5-3, with two runs in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Kuzbel laid down a perfect bunt for a one-out single. After a fly out, Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) struck out, but reached base on a wild pitch to load the bases. Bernstein then lined a two-run single just over the shortstop's head, scoring both Shirley and Kuzbel and sending DeRenzi to third. A double steal scored DeRenzi before a single from Webber allowed Bernstein to cross the plate to give GU a 7-5 lead.
Game Two: UMES 9, Georgetown 4
Georgetown's offense managed just four hits and UMES scored six times in the top of the second inning to defeat the Hoyas in game two, 9-4.
Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) started and lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up six runs, five earned on eight hits and one walk while striking out one. Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) threw a perfect 1.1 innings of relief while Anthony Morabito (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College HS) and Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) each had two scoreless innings and Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) had a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Bialkowski had two of Georgetown's four hits and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had two RBI.
GU got on the board right away in the bottom of the first with three runs. Shirley and Bialkowski each singled to put two runners on with one out. A walk to Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) loaded the bases before a single into right field by Bernauer scored both Shirley and Bialkowski and sent Bushor to third. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) then grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Bushor to score to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead.
The advantage did not last long as UMES scored six times in the top of the second as seven-consecutive Hawks reached with two outs.
UMES tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth off of Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) to extend its lead to 9-3.
Georgetown was not able to manage a hit after the third inning, but four-consecutive walks plated a run in the bottom of the seventh, to cut the deficit to 9-4. However, the Hoyas stranded the bases loaded and could not climb any closer.
GU will jump back into BIG EAST play this weekend, hosting Seton Hall at Shirley Povich Field for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is set for 7 p.m. while Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m.
