Georgetown Baseball Swept in a Doubleheader by Princeton

March 18, 2016

Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday as the Hoyas lost a pair of games to Princeton University, 7-3 and 8-4, at Shirley Povich Field. GU fell to 10-9 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 4-7.

The two teams played a doubleheader, moving Sunday's game to Friday in the anticipation of inclement weather.

Game One: Princeton 7, Georgetown 3 (10 innings)
Princeton tied the game with a two-out, two-strike home run in the top of the ninth, and scored four times in the 10th inning to defeat the Hoyas, 7-3, ending Georgetown's six-game winning streak.

Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started on the mound for the Hoyas and was brilliant, going seven shutout innings with two strikeouts while only allowing four hits.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) each had two hits to pace the offense.

The Hoyas got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first as Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) launched a one-out, two-run home run over the right field fence, scoring Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) who had walked to lead off the inning, to give Georgetown a 2-0 lead.

The lead held until the seventh inning when GU tacked on an insurance run to take a 3-0 lead. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City). After a walk to Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto), O'Reilly advanced to third on a fielder's choice groundout by DeRenzi and scored when the relay throw from the second-baseman was wild.

Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) came in to pitch in the top of the eighth and had a scoreless frame.

In the top of the ninth, the first two Princeton batters reached via a walk, but Swad settled down to strike out the next two batters. He went up, 0-2, to the next batter, but Princeton's Paul Tupper swatted a three-run home run to tie the game.

After the Hoyas stranded the winning run on third base in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers scored four times in the top of the 10th off of Swad and Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park).

Game Two: Princeton 8, Georgetown 4
Princeton scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away for the 8-4 win to complete the sweep.

Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) started and went six strong innings on the mound, giving up just two runs, one earned, while striking out three. Webb George Jr. (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) made his collegiate debut and went two shutout innings with a strikeout.

DeRenzi had two doubles for his second multi-hit game of the day, while Kuzbel and Garza each had two hits.

Princeton scored first with an unearned run in the top of the third and added to the lead with a run in the sixth.

The Tigers extended their lead to 7-0 with a five-run seventh inning off of three Georgetown relievers. All five runs came in to score on walks.

The Hoyas climbed back into it with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Garza led off with a single and went to second when Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) walked in a pinch-hitting appearance. One out later, Hall walked to load the bases. Bennett Stehr (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) pinch-hit for Shirley and drew a walk, forcing in Garza from third. DeRenzi followed with his second double of the game, scoring both Ricciardi and Hall, before Kuzbel singled in Stehr to cut the deficit to 7-4.

GU could not climb any closer as Princeton added an insurance run in the eighth for the final 8-4 margin.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. The game has been moved from its original 1 p.m. start time because of impending weather.
